Vitamin D
In summer it's easier to get our vitamin D fix as the body produces this nutrient from sunshine. Come winter, however, our vitamin D levels drop, compromising immunity and setting the stage for a deficiency that, if persistent, is linked to serious diseases.
Researchers recently reported that upping our vitamin D intake could prevent (per year) about 58,000 new cases of breast cancer, 49,000 new cases of colorectal cancer, and three-quarters of deaths from these cancers in Canada and the US.
